In the news

I wonder what will happen to this guy...

AWOL Soldier Surrenders
Associated Press | October 04, 2006
RADCLIFF, Ky. - An Army Soldier who fled to Canada rather than redeploy to Iraq surrendered Tuesday to military officials after asking for leniency.

Spc. Darrell Anderson, 24, said he deserted the Army last year because he could no longer fight in what he believes is an illegal war.

"I feel that by resisting I made up for the things I did in Iraq," Anderson said during a press briefing shortly before he turned himself in at nearby Fort Knox. "I feel I made up for the sins I committed in this war."

The thing is...all of these things are changing in our country. And some of them are not so good. So this guy is feeling like he made up for his *sins* by resisting to go back. If they just slap his hand and tell him that he's dishonarably discharged what does the oath mean to other young people who are considering joining the military? That it's ok to join until you feel like you don't want to go to war anymore or be a soldier? The oath was never about someone's personal feelings toward war. It's about defending the country and SWEARING TO GOD AND COUNTRY that you will die for it if necessary.

I don't know...I just don't think it's right. We let illegal aliens collect social security now when they haven't paid into it, and are not citizens. We slap peoples hands when they break their promises. No one has to be responsible anymore. No one has to live up to their word. It's just really lame.

The guy should go to confession if he feels that bad, and then step up and take his punishment.

That's just my two cents, though.

Oh for heaven's sake. He should have filled out the contiencious objector papers. Sadly, he more than likely won't get in much trouble. Do you know how long he was gone for? If it was less than (I think) 45 days, they don't really do much of anything, because it's not AWOL. I don't remember what it's called, but it's different. Gone is gone to me. The military is not by draft. If you sign up, you should serve your time in. These people kill me.

But that would be smart...which he doesn't appear to be. I don't think the Army wants him anymore...so they just want to get rid of him as quietly as possible.

Well, there is that. People are stupid.
